This is the position I adopt before I go on stage. It might look daft, but there is science behind it. Introducing: The Power Stance (AKA How To Convert Nerves Into Excitement).
The science? Physiologically speaking, nervousness and excitement are exactly the same. You’re not nervous, you’re excited. Make that your mantra.
Hands on hips (excellent for air circulation to the pits and surreptitious wiping of sweaty palms), shoulders pushed down, feet hip width apart.
Slow deep breaths. Smile because it helps to build confidence, even if you don’t feel like it on the inside.
I lock my knees so they don’t knock. My enormous clown feet (I’ve actually been kind to myself in the cartoon) are firmly planted on the floor. As the moment draws nearer, I rise up and down on my toes to “power up”.
As the final seconds tick by and the MC introduces me to the audience, I feel a rush of power and I run on to the stage.
Try it sometime, you might be surprised.
